Valentine's Day Song

Sung to:  "Mary Had a Little Lamb"

You're a special friend of mine,
Friend of mine, friend of mine,
You're a special friend of mine,
Be my Valentine.

5 Little Valentines

Five little valentines were having a race
The first little valentine was frilly with lace.
The second little valentine had a funny face.
The third little valentine said, "I love you".
The fourth little valentine said, "I do too".
The fifth little valentine was sly as a fox.
He ran the fastest to the valentine box.

Counting Valentines

Valentines, valentines, how many do I see?
Valentines, valentines, count them with me.
I have red ones, orange ones, yellow ones, too.
I have green ones, purple ones, and some that are blue.
Valentines, valentines, how many do I see?
Count them with me! 1-2-3-4-5.....

I'm a Little Valentine
Sung to:  "I'm a Little Teapot"

I'm a little valentine
Red and White
With ribbons and lace
I'm a beautiful sight
I can say, "I Love You"
On Valentine's Day
Just put me in an envelope
And give me away.
Valentine
Sung to:  "Did You Ever See a Lassie"

Will you please be my valentine,
My valentine, my valentine?
Will you please be my valentine?
For I love you.

Here's hugs and kisses
And lots of wishes.
Will you please be my valentine?
For I love you.

He stole the tarts,

And took them clean away.

Called for the tarts,

And scolded the knave full bore.

Art Activities

Valentine Sock Snowmen

This year we were a little late making our sock snowmen, so we made them Valentine Sock Snowmen.  We put them in the office window and caused quite a stir.  Parents wanted to buy them!  Well, they're not for sale, but gifts for my 22 Valentines this year.

TLC Projects

In the Winter book from TLC you will find the Valentine Card Holder and the Valentine Card.  The February Quilt is in A Year of Quilts book.  The mailman is in the People book.

Heart Rubbings

Place a piece of white paper over heart doilies and rub with red, pink, or purple crayons.

Heart Butterfly Necklace

These special necklaces were made for my students by Mrs. Maurine Prokop, Kindergarten Teacher from Pinewood Elementary, in Stuart, Florida.  Since November 2004, Maurine and I have been corresponding and we received these valentines just in time for Valentine's Day this year.  I can't wait to make them myself next year.  Thanks Maurine.

Trace the butterfly wings on white poster board.  Glue squares of tissue paper on wings.  A toilet paper roll is covered with wrapping paper and then heart stickers were added for the butterfly body.  The toilet paper roll was filled with candy before the ends were taped closed.  Add white glittery pipe cleaners for antennae.  Punch two holes at the top of the wings and add yarn to make the necklace.  Use glitter to add your student's names.

What a great bulletin board they made this year!

Valentine Puzzle Frame

Ellison has a heart shaped die cut that is a heart within a heart that I use for the frame.  I spray painted these white and glued puzzle pieces around the edge that were spray painted red.  I then glued a bow on the top and put a magnet on the back.  I took a new picture of each child and put that in the frame.

Heart Valentine Holders

Each student needs 2 paper plates.  Cut away a half of one paper plate.  Staple the plates together.  Glue a heart on the cut paper plate.  Decorate with hearts and stamps.  Students wrote their name on the small heart.  Punch two holes at the top of the back paper plate and tie a ribbon into a bow for an added touch.

We hung our Valentine Holders on our clothesline so that everyone could see them.

Animal Valentine Card Holders

by Carmen Horn

Highlights for Children, February 1990

Each student needs 2 paper plates.  Cut away a small section of the paper plates.  Place the cut paper plates face to face.  Staple or glue around the edges of the plates with the die cut heart tucked in for the tongue.  Use tracers for the ears, eyes, and nose.  Let your students cut out whiskers for the cat and add freckles for the puppy.  I staple on the ears and my students glue on the eyes, nose, and whiskers.  We also do a mouse.  New photos will come in February.

Finger Painted Hearts

Use red and white finger paint on white bulletin board paper.  After it dries, let your students trace a heart and cut it out.

Mosaic Heart

Pre-cut red, pink, and purple squares.  Each student will glue these on a sheet of white construction paper. After they are dry, your students trace a large heart over the mosaic pieces and then cut out to make a mosaic heart.

Glitter Hearts

Die-cut purple and red hearts and glue to an 8 x 8 piece of pink construction paper.  Let your students make designs with glue and then sprinkle glitter on them.

Use candy hearts to make patterns.

Estimation

Estimate candy hearts.  Pair your children and give each pair a box of candy hearts.  Let each estimate how many are in the box.  They must write their answer down.  I give my students 100's charts to count out the hearts to check their guess.

Sorting

Sort candy hearts.  How many different ways can you sort your candy hearts?

Same color

Same message

Same number of letters

Same number of words on the heart

Measurement

Use candy hearts to measure things in the classroom.

Ordering

I have die cut hearts from white paper that are glued to red half sheets of paper.  Write the number word at the top and write the number inside the heart.  My students put these in order from 0-20.

Cooking

Valentines Creamy Jigglers from Kraft

Ingredients
2-1/2 cups boiling water
2 pkg. (8-serving size each) JELL-O Brand Gelatin, any red flavor
1 cup cold 2% reduced fat milk
1 pkg. (4-serving size) JELL-O Vanilla Flavor Instant Pudding & Pie Filling

Preparation
Stir boiling water into gelatin in large bowl at least 3 minutes until completely dissolved. Cool 30 minutes at room temperature.

Pour milk into medium bowl. Add pudding mix. Beat with wire whisk 1 minute. Quickly pour into gelatin. Stir with wire whisk until well blended. Pour into 13x9-inch pan.

Refrigerate 3 hours or until firm. Dip bottom of pan in warm water about 15 seconds. Cut into decorative shapes with heart-shaped cookie cutters all the way through gelatin. Lift from pan.

Just For Fun

Several years ago, a parent made me a Valentine Bingo game from material scraps.  Each piece is a heart shape.  This is really good for visual discrimination.  Your students have to look close at the fabric to see if their card matches.

Every year after Christmas, I buy candy canes that are on sale.  I hot glue two candy canes together and this makes a special heart that I give my students.

Home Project

I send home a large heart run on tagboard to be decorated and cut out.
