Thanksgiving

Author Unknown

The year has turned its circle,

The seasons come and go.

The harvest is all gathered in

And chilly north winds blow.

Orchards have shared their treasures,

The fields, their yellow grain,

So open wide the doorway-

Thanksgiving comes again!

I Am Thankful

(Tune:  Are You Sleeping?)

I am thankful.

I am thankful.

Yes I am! Yes I am!

I'm thankful for my family,

And the friends who love me.

Yes I am!

Yes I am!

I'm a Little Turkey

(Tune:  I'm a Little Teapot)

I'm a little turkey;

I like to play,

I'm very hungry;

I eat all day.

When I see the hunter with his gun,

Then I know it's time to run.

Thanksgiving Dinner

(Tune:  Frere Jacques)

We eat turkey, we eat turkey.

Oh, so good.  Oh, so good.

Always on Thanksgiving, always on Thanksgiving,

Yum-yum-yum! Yum-yum-yum!

Verse 2:  Mashed potatoes

Verse 3:  Pie and ice-cream

Verse 4:  Home-made biscuits

Verse 5:  Turkey dressing

I'm a Little Indian

(Tune:  I'm a Little Teapot)

I'm a little Indian on the go,

Here is my arrow and here is my bow.

When I go out hunting, hear me shout-

Bear and buffalo-better watch out.

I'm a Little Pilgrim

(Tune:  I'm a Little Teapot)

I'm a little pilgrim on the run,

Here is my knife and here is my gun.

When I go out hunting, hear me shout-

Deer and turkey-better watch out.

A Turkey

(Tune:  Pop Goes the Weasel)

A turkey is a funny bird,

His head goes  wobble, wobble.

And he knows just one word,

Gobble, gobble, gobble.

Mr. Turkey

(Tune:  Frere Jacques)

Mr. Turkey, Mr. Turkey.

Run away, run away.

If you are not careful.

You will be a mouthful.

Thanksgiving Day, Thanksgiving Day!

Mr. Turkey

(Tune:  If You're Happy and You Know It)

Gobble-gobble, gobble-gobble says the bird,

Gobble-gobble, gobble-gobble says the bird.

Mr. Turkey gobble-gobbles,

And his feet go wobble-wobble.

Gobble-gobble, gobble-gobble says the bird.

Hello, Mr. Turkey

(Tune:  If You're Happy and You Know It)

Hello, Mr. Turkey

How are you?  (clap, clap)

Hello, Mr. Turkey

How are you?  (clap, clap)

With a wobble, wobble, wobble

and a gobble, gobble, gobble.

Hello, Mr. Turkey

How are you?  (clap, clap)

I Eat Turkey

(Tune Frere Jacques)

I eat turkey,

I eat turkey.

Yes, I do,

Yes, I do.

Turkey in my tummy,

Yummy, yummy, yummy.

Good for me,

Good for you.

Thanksgiving Song

(Tune:  Twinkle, Twinkle)

Let's be thankful for this day,

For our friends and for our play.

Let's be thankful; let's be glad,

For the food and things we have.

Let's give thanks for you and me,

And our home and family.

Class Books

We turned this story starter into a class book.

My turkey...

The turkey is a TLC Turkey from the TLC A Year of Quilts Book.

We also turned this story starter into a class book,

If I Had Been a Pilgrim

We use the Pilgrims' Portrait from the Fall Book from TLC.

Language Arts

I use Thanksgiving Dinner The Education Center, Inc. I Can Make It! I Can Read It-Fall as a repetitive-text booklet.  Your students will discover what is served for Thanksgiving dinner as they complete this book.  After the books are finished, the children read to me individually.

After reading Friendship's First Thanksgiving by William Accorsi, we make "My Thanksgiving Book" from Kinderlit.  On the cover the children make a handprint turkey.  The book includes a Pilgrim, Mayflower, log house, corn, and an Indian.  The children sound out the words on each page and copy the correct spelling from the board.  When the book is completed we read together.  As the children are reading they are tracking the words as we read.  These books are sent home to be shared with their families at Thanksgiving.  You can find this and many more great books from Kinderlit www.kinderlit.com

Math Activities

I use Five Little Turkeys The Education Center, Inc. I Can Make It! I Can Read It!-Fall as a backward counting book for the unit.  The students count the number of turkeys on strips and glue them onto the corresponding page in the booklet.  These is a good sequence activity for reverse counting.  After several choral readings at school, they are ready to read to their families.

Another counting book we make in this unit is 10 Little Native Americans from Little Readers For Little Readers Vol. 1  The books are reproduced and the students draw faces on the Native Americans.  The cover is illustrated with Native American symbols.

Indian Headbands

We make Indian headbands using pattern block pieces.  Each student makes his/her pattern on a workspace and then reproduces it on their headband.  They choose three colors for their feathers, trace, and cut out.  I staple the feathers to the headband.  These are worn at our Thanksgiving Feast.

Rigatoni Necklaces

I color rigatoni pasta and we string it in AB patterns.  These are tied into necklaces that are worn at our Thanksgiving Feast.  This year I colored the pasta with acrylic craft paint and alcohol.  The students used as many colors as they wanted making their necklaces.  The necklaces were much brighter than the food coloring I have used in the past.

Turkey Workjob Mats

I have duplicated  turkeys that need feathers onto construction paper.  I wrote 0-10 on the turkeys.  Feathers are used as counters.  The students put the right number of feathers behind the turkeys.

Thanksgiving Card

We make a Thanksgiving card for our parents.  The outside of the card has a turkey handprint and the inside says the following:

This isn't just any turkey,

As anyone can see.

I made it with my hand,

Which is a part of me.

It comes with lots of love,

Especially to say,

I hope you have a very

Indian Corn

Duplicate a corn cob onto tagboard.  The students glue tissue paper onto the corn.

TLC Projects

We will be doing several TLC projects for this unit.  The Indian Boy, Pilgrim Man, and Pilgrim Woman from the People Book, Pilgrims' Portrait from the Fall Book, Indian Corn from the Fall Book, and the Cornucopia from the Fall Book.

Tortilla Tepees

Better Homes and Gardens, November 1995

Made by Mrs. Shindler's Pre-K Class

Cut 7 or 8 inch flour tortillas in half.  Form each half into a cone, overlapping slightly and leaving a center top opening about 1/2 inch across.  Secure with a toothpick.  Dip ends of pretzel sticks in canned frosting, then insert 3 pretzels into center opening of each tepee and spread slightly apart, pressing against inside of tortilla to adhere.  Dilute desired food coloring with water and use paintbrush to make designs on side of tepee.
